There is perhaps no better Spring tradition for Capetonians than making the annual pilgrimage up the West Coast to see the vibrant display of indigenous flowers in bloom.
Whilst these fields lie seemingly dry and bare for months on end, they suddenly burst into life each year with all the splendour that indicates the beginning of Spring.
While the concept of Spring might seem a little foreign, thanks to the recent and widespread storms and snowfall across much of South Africa, these are actually the ideal conditions to ensure a spectacular show of wild flowers in a few weeks time. At Steenberg Hotel, we highly recommend that our guests plan a day trip up the West Coast in late August and early September. The Western Cape of South Africa is known as the “Sixth Flower Kingdom” of the world, boasting the greatest variety of indigenous flowers to be found in the country. The fields upon fields of floral carpets are a rare and breathtaking sight to behold, and truly evoke the Spring feelings of new life and fresh beginnings. In addition to experiencing the beauty of the floral displays, one also gets to visit and enjoy some of the West Coast’s quaintest and most popular towns, such as Darling, Clanwilliam, Paternoster, Langebaan and Niewoudtville.
To help you in planning the perfect West Coast outing, we’ve put together a list of some of the best flower shows on offer. Let the Steenberg team pack a delicious picnic for you, slap on the sunscreen and head off – just don’t forget your camera!
