OUR EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR 2010
Nicolette Barkley (Waitron, Catharina’s
Restaurant)
Highly motivated and super competent, Nicolette
Barkley is the deserving Steenberg Hotel
‘Employee of the Year’ for 2010.
A waitron at Catharina’s restaurant since 2008,
this passionate, vibrant and hard-working lady
is a ray of sunshine in the lives of all who
cross her path.
|
35-Year old, Nicolette Barkley is our Employee
of the Year for 2010. She takes great pleasure
in delivering a professional service to guests
dining at our fine dining restaurant Catharina’s.
With her ready smile, she ascribes her excellent
work ethic to a deep passion for all that is
food and wine related, and the desire to be the
very best that she can be.
A born and bred Capetonian, she was raised in
Square Hill in Retreat, and attended the
Crestway Senior Secondary School in Steenberg,
after which she matriculated from the Southern
Cape Technical College in George in 1992. A
passionate food and wine lover since as early as
she can remember, she enrolled at the National
Hotel Management School a year thereafter, where
she gained a solid foundation in all aspects of
hotel management, graduating in 2005. Before
joining Steenberg she worked at other leading
Cape Town hotels, such as the Commodore Hotel on
the V&A Waterfront, and also Fancourt Hotel in
George.
The hospitality industry demands long working
hours, but whenever possible, she spends time
with her 10-year old son Jason, close friends
and family members, and loves to take long walks
on some of Cape Town’s breathtaking beaches.
Nicolette is an inspiration to the Steenberg
team and we are proud to have her with us. Well
done Nicolette! |

ALL THE WAY FROM THE USA
21-Year old Ian Burkland travelled all the way
from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the USA to
spend 2 months with us at Steenberg Vineyards
absorbing our winemaking culture and methods.
This passionate young man is the youngest of
three brothers, one of whom is a 1st degree
Sommelier, so it’s no wonder that he became
intrigued by the art of wine and winemaking at a
young age. Ian has travelled through some of the
world’s renowned wine regions, such as Burgundy,
Tuscany, and the Napa Valley in California. He
has relished the opportunity to work on a South
African wine farm and learn first-hand about the
wine making process. ‘It’s been a
once-in-a-lifetime experience working with a
first class winemaker such as JD (Pretorius)’,
he beams. Ian has been a pleasure to have on our
team, and we wish him well with his future
endeavours in the wonderful world of wine, after
his internship with us ends mid-April.

INTRODUCING HMS ECHO
We have introduced a new wine to our intriguing
HMS range, which owes its name to the
fascinating history of the Battle of Muizenberg.
HMS Echo augments the duo of HMS Rattlesnake
Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and HMS Sphynx Chardonnay
2010 released in November 2010 - both which have
already been sold out.
HMS Echo is a Bordeaux style blend, with
liquorice and dark chocolate that slides
smoothly over the tongue, rounded off with hints
of cigar box and cedar oak. On the palate the
wine shows elegant tannins with great structure
and an aftertaste that echoes – a wine for all
occasions. (R80 at the Cellar Door). |

member to visit one of the wine-producing
regions within the network. Zelda Petrus, our
deserving Wine Sales Ambassador was selected to
jet off to the Napa Valley to learn about wine
sales and marketing from the wineries there. She
recently returned from what she describes as a
‘life-changing experience’. We share her story
with you.

STEENBERG CELLAR DOOR SPECIAL (April 2011)
April Special: Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2010
priced at just R76 per bottle. (Usual price:
R95).
This wine is dominated by lovely tropical notes
of litchi and guava on the nose, fading into
green pepper and asparagus as it opens up. A
crisp line of acidity carries the wine
beautifully, with a firm and lingering
aftertaste. Open a bottle to savour during those
long summer days! |
