With festive season on the horizon, the mood in the Constantia Valley is one of jubilant expectancy, and we have entered into the spirit of the season with a host of exciting events and special celebrations designed to delight your senses.

Our popular annual Christmas Carols Concert, a magical musical evening under starlit skies, takes place on the lawns of the hotel on Wednesday 21 December, and there is little to beat the friendly and sophisticated picnic atmosphere to kick-start your festive celebrations. Throughout the holidays both our restaurants Catharina’s and Bistro Sixteen82 will be serving up irresistible Festive Feasts in our spectacular vineyards setting. Always a hot favourite is Chef Garth Almazan’s legendary Sunday Jazz Lunch Buffet at Catharina’s, and with the pleasure of seeing our resident Spotted Eagle-Owl family in a nearby oak tree, it will be well worth including it on your itinerary.

We look forward to sharing a glass of wine, a delicious meal, or a stay at our luxurious hotel with you over the ‘silly season’, where a warm welcome always awaits. Wishing you and your family a very merry and blessed festive season, and good tidings for the New Year.

TALENTED SOPRANO JANELLE VISAGIE TO GRACE OUR CHRISTMAS CAROLS CONCERT STAGE
(Wednesday 21 December 2011)

Our open-air Christmas Carols Concert is one of the highlights of the festive season for many in the Constantia Valley, and this year we welcome one of Cape Town’s most talented sopranos Janelle Visagie, to the stage. The concert takes place on Wednesday 21 December on the lawns in front of the hotel from 18:00 to 20:00, and the superb Cape Town String Ensemble will be headlining the bill for a second year running. Tenor Gareth Witten is back again as a guest performer to captivate us all with his vibrant performance, and the evening will end on a high note with the magical candlelit sing-along to traditional Christmas Carols. As always, our very own Steenberg Choir will be lending their voices to this ‘grand finale’.

Tickets cost R90 per adult and R45 per child under the age of 12 years - with a maximum of 6 persons accommodated per booking. With capacity for only 550 people, pre-bookings are essential. Included in this musical evening is a glass of Klein Steenberg wine or fruit juice, and a candle. Bring along your own picnic baskets and blankets, or book a table for dinner at Catharina’s to round off a perfect summer’s evening.

OUR SPOTTED EAGLE-OWL FAMILY EXPANDS

We recently welcomed two feathery new members to a family of Spotted Eagle-Owls that reside in the oak trees outside Catharina’s. The beautiful couple took up residence here some five years ago, and have since provided guests and staff with hours of joy and laughter with their antics. Clearly visible from the restaurant terrace, guests and hotel staff alike are keeping a close watch on the new arrivals, along with their doting parents.

Juvenile Spotted Eagle-Owls stay dependent on their parents for three months after hatching and before leaving the nest, so guests visiting us over the festive season may look forward to catching a glimpse of these lovable, wide-eyed chicks.

THE 14th HOLE AT STEENBERG

This month our virtual tour of the Steenberg Golf Course takes us to one of the most memorable holes on the course - the 14th Hole. Not only is it the largest single green in Southern Africa, it also has the appearance of being in a natural amphitheatre, and is one of the most photographed holes on the course.

34-Year old Daniel Kashila is the friendly and competent team member who warmly welcomes our guests on arrival. He is also the first ‘port of call’ for visitors arriving after dark, and it is his professional and caring service that determines their first impression, and sets the tone for our world-class hospitality experience.

JOIN US FOR A VINEYARD PICNIC THIS FESTIVE SEASON
(From Friday 16 December onwards)

For many of us there is nothing to beat the simple pleasure of a picnic – especially when it takes us to a breathtaking vineyard setting. We have added decadent Vineyard Picnics to our great Steenberg wine experience just in time for festive season.

So gather up your loved ones, bring along a comfy picnic blanket and indulge in a delicious picnic outing on the lawns in front of our winery. Our festive season picnic baskets are laden with culinary delicacies and each basket for two, at R300, includes a bottle of Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot.

Picnic baskets will be available daily from Friday 16 December onwards, served between 11:00 and 17:00. Kiddies’ picnics are available on request, as are picnic baskets for special occasions. Group picnics are also available by prior arrangement for Christmas parties and corporate functions, and should be pre-booked.

HELP US TURN FLIP-FLOPS INTO SCHOOL SHOES

Festive season is a time of joy and laughter, especially for children, who wait all year round for their special gifts placed at the Christmas tree. Sadly, for many little ones though, it’s simply another day in the struggle to make ends meet. This year we will be spreading some festive goodwill through a fundraiser we will be running at our cellar door in partnership with Barefoot No More, a national school shoe campaign for children in need.

By treating yourself or one of your loved ones to a pair of pink designer ‘Steenberg 1682 Methode Cap Classique’ branded flip-flops, you will be providing two pairs of new school shoes to children in need.

At R375 a pair, these make the perfect Christmas gift or beach accessory, and, through your support, this will enable at least some children to take those vital steps towards a better education, and eventually a better life. What a wonderful way to give something back at this special time of year! Available from Steenberg Winery from mid-December onwards.
