We are proud to announce that the Steenberg Hotel was named
the Best Luxury Hotel in Africa by
www.TripAdvisor.com,
the world’s largest travel site in its 2011 Travelers’
Choice awards. Lauded for its ‘excellent service and
perfect mixture of old world charm and modern amenities’,
Steenberg topped the list as voted by real travellers from
across the globe, many of whom have frequented the hotel,
and experienced its service and accommodation offering -
with competition results ultimately based on the question ‘would
you be willing to recommend it?’.
This follows hot on the heels of another major international
accolade, where Steenberg Vineyards was voted one of nine
global winners in the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine
Tourism awards, also taking top honours in South Africa in
the categories of architecture, parks and gardens, as well
as wine tourism services.
Towards the end of February, please be on the lookout for
our new-look, user-friendly Steenberg website
www.steenberghotel.com, and in the meantime, do
enjoy our wonderful ‘Constantia summer’ during this month of
romance.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS CONCERT HITS THE HIGH NOTE
650 Guests congregated on the lawns of the hotel
on the 20th of December to share in the festive
cheer of the Steenberg Christmas Carols concert.

The Cape Town String Ensemble, whose line-up includes some
of the city’s most accomplished classical
musicians, led by conductor Leon Starker,
enthralled the crowd, together with soloists
Gareth Witten and Magdalene Minnaar, and the
Steenberg Choir. |

CAPE EAGLE OWLS ALSO CALL STEENBERG
'HOME'
|
 |
A Cape eagle owl family (mom, dad and feathery
young chick) has taken up residence in the trees
outside Catharina’s Restaurant, where they have
become a constant source of fascination for
diners. The Cape eagle-owl is found in many
parts of southern Africa, where it lives in
rocky, sometimes mountainous areas, and in
various vegetation types. Most of its diet
consists of small mammals, but it also feeds on
birds and invertebrates, and amazingly, it can
carry prey that is 4,5 kg, or up to four times
its weight! It nests in scrapes in the ground,
often on ledges or between cliffs, laying
between one and three eggs. Incubation lasts
between 34 and 38 days, the female doing most of
the hard work, with the male sometimes taking
over while the female feeds. After fledging,
juveniles stay dependent on their parents for
two to three months, before leaving the nest -
so do book your ‘front row’ seats on the terrace
at Catharina’s soon to catch a glimpse of our
unusual guests! |

VAUGHN BRAND, MAINTENANCE MANAGER
28 Year old Vaughn Brand is the very efficient
Maintenance Manager at the Steenberg Hotel. His
love for this property is evident in his
no-nonsense, practical and hands-on approach
that ensures that the day-to-day running of the
hotel operates like clockwork. His innate
understanding of providing a seamless visit for
each guest is evident not only in his affable
demeanour and trained eye, which will spot the
slightest defect, but also his in-depth
understanding of every department within the
hotel.
|
Vaughn Brand first joined
the Steenberg team in June
2010 as a Maintenance Supervisor, and so
impressed the management of Steenberg that he
was promoted to Maintenance Manager a few short
months thereafter. The young Fish Hoek boy studied Motor Mechanics
N2 at West Lake College, and kicked off his
career in 1997 as a pool technician and water
chemist, later becoming foreman, before he was
appointed as team leader at a leading
waterproofing company. He then worked as a
construction foreman before taking up his
position at Steenberg. Vaughn says he thoroughly enjoys the challenges
and stimulating working environment at Steenberg,
and on his off days he likes nothing better than
to build computers! |

STEENBERG VINEYARDS NEWS
|

New vineyard boards at Steenberg! |
There was a small fire on the Steenberg grounds on Wednesday 19 February, which started at the neighouring Barnyard complex, but fortunately the fire was stopped short of the Sauvignon Blanc block at the Southgate entrance. The security team at Steenberg had the opportunity to put their fire-training into practice, and contributed hugely to stopping the blaze, alongside our very own fire fighting wine maker JD Pretorius!
Harvest news from JD and his team is that fruit started coming in for the 1682 Chardonnay Brut on 12 January, the exact same date as last year. Picking at Steenberg will however only start mid February, with volume being up on last year, and quality looking great! |
