ZOLANI SOLWANKI: COMMIS CHEF (CATHARINA’S
RESTAURANT)
|
31-Year old Zolani Solwanki joined Steenberg in
July 2005 as a kitchen steward at Catharina’s
Restaurant, having earned his living before as a
general contractor providing gardening, building
and painting services. His industrious approach
and eagerness to learn led to his promotion to
Commis Chef in 2007, and his natural talent and
passion for food has since been nurtured and
allowed to bloom.
Zolani loves to work with food and to discover
new products and different cooking techniques.
He dreams of being a great chef someday, and
treasures each moment spent creating delicious
dishes for diners at Catharina’s. Most of all he
enjoys the hustle and bustle that accompanies
the preparation of an á la carte service. Not
one to back down from a challenge, this
passionate young man intends to grasp every
opportunity that life presents. We are
privileged to have him on our team. |

FAREWELL EDUARDO VILLA
Those of you who have visited us over the years
may well have spent time admiring the 15
magnificent steel sculptures by award-winning
sculptor Eduardo Villa that grace the grounds of
the Steenberg Estate. We were saddened by his
passing on the 8th of May at the age of 95 -
however we are heartened to be one of the venues
across South Africa that will keep his artistic
legacy alive, by way of our Eduardo Villa
collection of selected sculptures - hand-picked
by erstwhile owner of Steenberg, the late Graham
Beck.

Balanced Darkly

African
Astronaut |
Among the fascinating steel sculptured
structures strategically positioned throughout
Steenberg, are three cone shaped steel figures
in bright blue, green and yellow appropriately
titled Energetic Figure III; Cones in Tension;
and Energetic Figure VI. A dramatic black
work entitled Balanced Darkly displays a
richly varied interplay of planes and shadows,
expressing pent-up energy; while African
Astronaut also from the cone series, is
typical of Eduardo Villa’s theme of the
assertive human figure, beautifully emphasized
by its powerful red colour.
Eduardo Villa was born on 31 May 1915 in
Bergamo, Italy, where he spent much of his early
childhood watching his uncle, a stonemason at
work, later studying sculpture at the Andrea Fantoni School of Art in Bergamo. He first
arrived in South Africa as a prisoner of war and
stayed to become the country's most prolific and
famous abstract sculptor. He has won numerous
awards and represented South Africa five times
at the Venice Biennale, four times at the Sao
Paulo Biennale in Brazil and once at the
Biennale in Chile, during his rich and
interesting life, creating over 1000 works,
mostly in metal and bronze, and mostly on
commission.
His very first commission was for the faculty of
dentistry at the University of the Witwatersrand
in 1950, and this piece still occupies its
original position at the faculty entrance. One
of his most famous early works is a 6.6 metre
warrior figure commissioned by the state iron
and steel corporation, Iscor, erected at
Voortrekkerhoogte outside Pretoria in 1961 to
commemorate South Africa becoming a republic.
Other famous works include The Knot, outside the
Cape Town Civic Centre, and The Confrontation,
in front of the Rand Merchant Bank head office
in Sandton. A total of some 70 of his sculptures
adorn other public open spaces in Gauteng.
His death closely follows that of his late wife,
Greek poet Claire Zafirakos, who passed away
last year. |

STEENBERG DRIVES SEMILLON REVIVAL
Steenberg is a major driving force
behind the renaissance of Semillon in
South Africa, and we are proud to share
the news that our Steenberg Semillon
2010 not only made it onto the
Top 100
SA Wines ratings guide this year, but
also won a Gold Medal at the prestigious
International
Decanter World Wine
Awards.
|
 |
Congratulations to winemaker JD
Pretorius who firmly believes that the time has
come to recognize Semillon as an outstanding
cultivar with great
potential, particularly as a ‘food
wine’.
He recently demonstrated this
most effectively at a 20-wine Semillon
blind tasting for a group of wine
writers, retailers, wine stewards and
sommeliers on Friday 20 May. We believe
he may just be onto a good thing! |

STEENBERG CELLAR DOOR SPECIAL (June
2011)
Steenberg Shiraz 2009, priced at
just R100 per bottle. (Usual price:
R125).
This full bodied Shiraz is deep garnet
in colour with hints of white pepper,
violets, spice and a touch of vanilla on
the nose. It has a firm structure, with
lots of ripe berry characters and great
freshness to the finish, while its
savoury aftertaste will leave you
longing for more. The last word in
finesse, this red wine is superb served
with a Fillet au Poivre and
Beef Bourguignonne or with red meats
grilled over an open flame. |
