MEAT FREE MONDAYS AT CATHARINA’S

 
Catharina’s was one of the first restaurants in South Africa (if not the first) to offer a ‘Meat Free Mondays’ menu of hearty fine dining vegetarian options when it was introduced here in September 2009.
 

Chef Garth Almazan attributes his inspiration for spearheading this initiative locally, to the global Meat Free Mondays campaign themed ‘Eat less meat for a better planet’, which is supported by a host of international celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney. THE MEETING ROOM

 
Our state-of-the-art conference and function venue, THE MEETING ROOM is located within a serene garden setting across from the reception area of our luxurious 5-star hotel. Seating 30 delegates, it is ideally suited for small to medium sized conferences, as well as product launches, seminars, directors’ meetings or corporate events and functions.
 

The Steenberg Meet and Golf or Meet and Spa Half-Day Package offers excellent value as a conference and meeting option in the tranquil setting of our working wine farm. Ideal for either a morning or afternoon conference, meeting or brainstorming session, it includes a choice of either 18 Holes at the Steenberg Golf Course, or a pampering session at the Gingko Spa at Steenberg for each delegate, once business has been wrapped up.
 
Included in this package is venue hire for half a day, all standard equipment, teas and coffees, pastries and refreshments, plus a choice of 18 Holes Golf OR a Steam, Back and Neck Massage, Foot Reflex Massage or Express Facial at the Spa, for up to 12 delegates. Lunch or dinner can be booked at Catharina’s Restaurant located just metres from the venue, as an optional extra.

LUZUKO SOMPA, HOUSEMAN
 
     

31-Year old Luzuko is one of the most efficient Housemen at the Steenberg Hotel. Luzuko who hails from the Eastern Cape, joined Steenberg Hotel in 2004 as a Steward in the hotel kitchens. His willingness to assist beyond the call of his own duties was soon noticed, and he was offered the position of Houseman in 2007.
 
His leisure time is equally juggled between his great passions, which are listening to good music, watching his favourite Soccer team play and tending his home and garden.
 
Serving guests is clearly more of a passion than a task for this competent member of our team, who ensures that our guests’ every need is tended to. We are inordinately proud to have Luzuko on the Steenberg team.

HARVEST NEWS
 
This year’s harvesting commenced on 12 January and winemaker JD Pretorius and his team are now in full swing, having started with the plucking of the chardonnay grapes for the Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Brut.
 
According to JD the recent heat waves have posed quite a challenge, with all the fruit ripening at the same time. However, he is thrilled with the intense vibrancy of the fruit harvested from the new, young blocks of Sauvignon Blanc – all of which have been hand harvested as the elevation on these blocks is too steep for machine harvesting.

ZELDA PETRUS DOES US PROUD 
 
Zelda Petrus, our award-winning Wine Sales Ambassador is jetting off to the Napa Valley this month to learn about wine sales and marketing from wineries here, as part of a prize for Steenberg having won the global Wine Tourism Services award in the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism competition.
 
We couldn’t be more proud of Zelda who first started her career with us as a cleaner, and has diligently worked her way up to becoming a wine expert. We look forward to hearing about her trip when she returns.

If the fragrantly fresh Mixed Summer Berries with vanilla yoghurt and honey-comb doesn’t tickle your fancy, then a delicious serving of his superb Eggs Royale (smoked Franschhoek trout on potato rosti with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce) certainly will!
