Catharina's fields a sommelier...
Higgo Jacobs has joined
the restaurant staff as Sommelier.
South African born Higgo brings a wealth of experience to
Steenberg. It was whilst studying his BA Law at Stellenbosch University
that Higgo’s interest in wine
piqued. After graduating he commenced work at Hazendal
where he became champion winemaker Ronell
Wiid’s assistant - an excellent
foundation for this ambitious young man.

He decided
to go to London where he cut his teeth working for award winning
and highly respected small wine merchant Anthony Byrne “a
hard task master, I learnt a lot” says Higgo. Most
recently, it was whilst Manager of Jeroboam, renowned wine
merchants in London’s
trendy Notting Hill that he heard that
Catharina’s had an opening for a Sommelier and he applied.
When asked what his hobbies are he says “oh, I am studying
my LLB part time”. His overarching interest is in wine and
its challenges.
Higgo was
an Assistant Judge at IWC in 2007, a judge in 2008 and has been
invited to judge at the 2009 International Wine Challenge the
world’s largest wine competition. He has his Master
Sommeliers Certificate.
|
Two weeks ago Higgo Jacobs did a Michael Fridjohn’s
Wine Evaluation Course at the Wine Tasting
Academy, a
tough one where 350 wines were tasted, most of them blind. Our
esteemed Sommelier scored a distinction! Passing with 84%.
Congratulations Higgo we are proud of you!
Editor’s note: Impressive! Can only add to the
extraordinary experience at Catharina's.

January has been a busy month for the Team

at it producing and perfecting our favourite

The Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2008, part of Steenberg's flagship range will not be
released. John Loubser said that
unfortunately the 2008 Reserve did not perform well enough
during tasting to warrant being released.

The harvest started later than usual this
year due to the cooler summer we have been experiencing. The
first fruit for the Brut 1682 arrived at the cellar a week ago,
on Monday, 26 January. The fruit for the MCC (Method Cap Classique) is picked much greener to
achieve a higher acid. 27 tons were picked on that day.

|
Regular
visitors to Steenberg and certainly residents of the Estate may
have noticed the three owls that made their home in the Sauvignon
Blanc “Gate Block” (south gate); these unusual
scarecrows are to chase away the wild birds eating the pips out
of the grapes and leaving the rest of the grape to rot...
