The people of Steenberg

WE INTRODUCE VUYANI SOMPA (HOUSEMAN)

Vuyani Sompa embarked on his career at Steenberg some six years ago, initially as a gardener, tending and maintaining the gardens and the ‘greens’ of Steenberg’s Championship Golf Course. He then worked as a Steward in the kitchens, before being promoted to his current position as Houseman. Vuyani is a talented and willing all-rounder, and his friendly demeanour, and competent approach is an asset to our maintenance team, while his services as a room attendant contribute to the smooth running of our housekeeping department.

Born and educated in the Transkei, where his family resides, he moved to Cape Town upon completing his high school education, joining the Steenberg team shortly thereafter. Vuyani regards himself as a member of the Steenberg family, and along with his two uncles and a brother who are also employed on the estate, loves feeling part of the team here. He cites as his major motivation his unquenchable willingness to learn something new every day. He also thrives on being exposed to people from different cultures, and being in the hub of the tourism industry.

JD JETS OFF TO JUDGE IN BORDEAUX ...
Our jet-setting young winemaker, JD Pretorius recently took off for a visit to Bordeaux to judge a major international Sauvignon Blanc Competition. Selected as one of 40 tasters from 10 countries, JD was the only South African invited to take part in the first Concours Mondial du Sauvignon at the renowned Concours Mondial de Bruxelles during the Bordeaux Fete le Vin wine fair held in Bordeaux, France on 26 June.

512 Wines were presented from France, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Brazil and South Africa. France dominated both awards and entries – with over 300 entries and 90 awards. Chile was the next most successful, with 61 entries and 21 medals.

Around 80,000ha of Sauvignon Blanc are estimated to be planted worldwide, with the largest concentrations in France, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa. Steenberg is widely recognised as one of the leading, and most lauded Sauvignon Blanc producers in South Africa.

www.decanter.com reported JD as saying: 'Sauvignon is an extremely demanding grape variety to get right, but it is often derided by critics as being too populist, or one-dimensional. Even consumers in South Africa seem to be slowly moving away from it back towards lightly oaked Chardonnays – but it's a grape variety that deserves better critical recognition when in the hands of the right producers.'.

WORLD CUP SOCCER FANS ‘SHOP TILL THEY DROP’ AT OUR CELLAR DOOR

The World Cup has seen our Cellar Door sales booming, with mainly teams of English, American and South African soccer fans paying us a visit over the past few weeks. Judging from the sales of our wine, it seems we’ve made more than a few new supporters ...

STEENBERG CELLAR DOOR SPECIAL (July 2010)

Steenberg Shiraz 2008 priced at just at R96.00 per bottle. (Usual price: R120)

This new release has already achieved a 4 star rating in the Wine Magazine Shiraz Challenge.

A full bodied Shiraz that is deep garnet in colour with hints of white pepper, violets, spice and vanilla fading into subtle mocha on the nose, with firm structure, lots of ripe berry characters on the palate and a soft velvety finish. All combine to make this wine an ideal partner for fillet au poivre or beef bourguignonne - in fact all red meats grilled over open flames. This wine will continue to develop and will reward cellaring for up to 8 years.
