This month we celebrate Fathers – those special men who deserve to be pampered and spoilt on Father’s Day. To show your Dad how much you appreciate him, surprise him with a celebratory lunch at Catharina’s, followed by an indulgent afternoon at The Spa at Steenberg, that will have him feeling like he is ‘king of the world’.

With World Cup Fever reaching a peak, June is without a doubt the month to celebrate all things South African.

Located in the heart of the Constantia valley, the farm is a historically significant landmark in Cape Town. If that’s not reason enough to pay us a visit during this momentous occasion - the first ever World Cup Soccer Tournament to be held on African soil - then perhaps our newly introduced Free Range Fridays menu at Catharina’s, our award-winning restaurant on the estate, will be the deciding ‘raison d'être’?

We wish all our World Cup 2010 visitors to Cape Town a wonderful stay in our grand ‘Mother City’ and welcome you to our corner of the breathtaking Constantia Valley.

FREE RANGE FRIDAYS AT CATHARINA'S

For food lovers seeking a novel dining experience, our newly introduced Free Range Fridays menu at Catharina’s offers an adventurous taste sensation. The brainchild of Executive Chef Garth Almazan, the à la Carte Free Range Fridays lunch and dinner menus feature a tasty selection of hearty and simply delicious organ meat dishes such as Roasted Chalmar Bone Marrow with Quinoa stuffing, Pan Fried Calf’s Liver, and Confit of Miso Sake Pork Belly, as well as old time favourite winter desserts.

Although it is increasingly the vogue among diners to select organ meats above conventional cuts in celebration of its intense flavours, organ meats are also very much in line with the trend for healthier eating, and these power-packed nutritional delicacies boast an impressive range of health benefits.

The menu choices are ideal for business people seeking a traditional lunchtime option on a rainy day, while the more leisurely dinner patron will revel in this fresh taste discovery. The Free Range Friday menu changes weekly.

Our traditional à la Carte menu will still be available on Fridays, as well as the popular Winter Special Menus.

Pre-booking at Catharina’s is essential. Please call Tel 021 713-2222 or email.

A WHOLE NEW VINEYARD IS BORN

Our Farm Manager Johann de Swardt will have his hands full for the next five years as he embarks on the replanting of close to 40 hectare of our vineyards. He explains that this is to replace the old vines, which have come to the end of their life-span, giving way for new vines which will bring a freshness and intensity to the flavour to our grapes.

All in all this will have a very positive effect on our grapes, and subsequently on the quality of our wines.

STEENBERG CELLAR DOOR SPECIAL (June 2010)

Steenberg Merlot 2008 priced at just at R96 per bottle. (Usual price: R120)

This deep purple Merlot has great fruit concentration, with hints of spice, aniseed and liquorice. It is multi-faceted, with blueberry and dark chocolate aromas on the nose; and black and red berry intensity on the palate. Rich but subtle oak flavours provide this wine with a long, full savoury finish. As it is best enjoyed with lamb roasts and good conversation, it’s well worth purchasing a few bottles to keep tucked away for one of those lazy Sunday afternoons ...
