With Christmas and New Year galloping towards us, it’s the time of year to undertake one of life’s most pleasurable indulgences - contemplating where best to celebrate the festive season with a delicious meal surrounded by family and friends.

Chef Garth Almazan at Catharina’s Restaurant has stepped up to the plate with a selection of Christmas and New Year’s fare that is a temptation to the palate and a feast for the eye.

For visitors and local holiday makers, our Summer Dinner Menu at Catharina’s offers a mouth-watering array of culinary delights from early November onwards.

On that note we are very proud to bring you news of Catharina’s 6th American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award. Being named for this award six years in a row is a feather in the cap for the entire team at Catharina’s who consistently ensure that our guests are offered a world class wining and dining experience.

CATHARINA’S AWARDED AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM CARD FINE DINING AWARD – SIX TIMES RUNNING!

Celebrations were the order of the day as news reached us of Catharina's being awarded its 6th American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Award. Congratulations to the sterling team here led by Executive Chef Garth Almazan and Food & Beverage Manager Llewellyn Joorst, who uphold our five-star wining and dining experience.

Catharina’s Restaurant was named among only 88 restaurants in the country for an American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Award this year. A proud Garth Almazan accepted the award on behalf of Catharina’s at the Cape Town leg of the awards. However, he firmly attributes this coveted recognition of Catharina’s wine and dining experience to a dedicated team effort.

The American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining Awards were introduced thirteen years ago as a service to guide discerning diners toward superior dining opportunities. The selection criteria include quality of cuisine, service (including menu and wine knowledge), wine list, décor and ambience, with strong emphasis on maintaining high levels of consistency.

This year the focus was also on green initiatives, in response to the global movement among the hospitality industry to become more ‘green’ friendly. Catharina’s is very much a forerunner of the new ‘green’ consciousness among South African restaurants, having spearheaded the global ‘Meat Free Mondays’ campaign locally, and more recently also adding ‘Free Range Fridays’ to our fine dining options here.

SUMMER DINNER MENU AT CATHARINA’S

Chef Garth Almazan will introduce his delicious Summer Dinner Menu in early November, offering the perfect reason to escape to the Constantia Valley for an evening of culinary indulgence. With a mouth-watering selection of dishes offering cuisine choices for meat lovers and vegetarians alike, and desserts to satisfy the sweetest tooth, it is the perfect way to end off a summer’s day.

Catharina’s Summer Dinner Menu

Garth Almazan has created an à la carte Summer Dinner Menu with a selection of dishes that resemble delightful splashes of texture, taste and colour. Starters include the exotic Malay Crusted King Scallop with lychee samoosa, sweet pepper salsa, marinated cucumber, saffron aioli and spicy prawn beignets; while main courses such as the Springbok Loin with potato & celeriac gratin, savoy cabbage & cumin puree and sauté baby spinach topped with red wine jus will tantalize your palate. Mouthwatering desserts such as the Strawberry Mille Feulle with balsamic, mascarpone baked Alaska, and mango puree topped with white chocolate foam will melt all resistance. Whatever your culinary pleasure, Catharina’s offers refreshingly satisfying sunset summer dining.

Catharina’s Summer Dinner Menu will change on a weekly basis, and is available from early November until the end of March. Booking is essential

CATHERINE SCHULZE, ROOMS DIVISION MANAGER

Catherine Schulze is the competent manager of our Rooms Division at the Steenberg Hotel. Not only does she oversee the Reservations and Front Desk team, she is also the person who ensures that the guest visit is seamlessly arranged.

As Rooms Division Manager for Steenberg Hotel, Catherine Schulze is as often called upon to listen to suggestions our guests may have, as she is to smooth out a reservation query or hiccup. With her vast experience and insight into the hotel industry, 36-year old Catherine is also the point of call for the front office team.

A farm girl at heart, she was raised on the family farm in Banhoek in Stellenbosch, and matriculated in 1992 at the Rhenish Girls High School here. Her very first position was as Receptionist at the Stellenbosch Hotel in her home town, and she went on to carve a career in this industry over a period of some 15 years. Through sheer hard work and determination she worked her way up from Guest Liaison Officer to Front Office Manager with tenures at notable hotels such as the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West and the Radisson Hotel at the V&A Waterfront, before joining the Steenberg team in 2007. With her calm demeanor and no-nonsense approach, Catherine is a true inspiration to her team.

When not on duty, she spends time with family and friends and enjoys a game of squash, mountain biking and a stint of sailing on the open seas.

We are also proud to share news of our Steenberg Shiraz 2008 that won a gold medal at the Veritas Awards 2010. BISTRO SIXTEEN82 CELEBRATES WITH OYSTERS AND BUBBLY

We can hardly believe that it’s been a whole year since we opened the doors of Bistro Sixteen82 on Friday the 13th of November 2009 – and what an incredible 12 months it has been! Cape Town has embraced our Cellar Door restaurant with open arms, and we have had a ‘full house’ for breakfast, lunch and tapas on most days. A favoured meeting place for the trendy set and equally for families seeking a tranquil gourmet escape in the Constantia winelands, with its leisurely ambience and breathtaking setting, it’s the ideal spot to catch up with old friends, and forge new friendships.

To celebrate, Chef Brad Ball has introduced a seductive Oyster and Bubbly menu offering a succulent choice of fresh oyster dishes paired with one of Steenberg’s own ‘Bubblies’. His new Summer Tapas menu also is a celebration of the best fare we offer here, with a tempting selection of antipasti, seafood dishes and vegetarian choices.

Join us in raising a glass to a year of delicious delicacies and memorable moments.

STEENBERG VINEYARDS LAUNCHES BRAND NEW HMS RANGE

We recently launched our intriguing Steenberg HMS Range at the historical site of the Battle of Muizenberg. Guests gathered around a long table to enjoy a luncheon prepared by Bistro Sixteen82 Chef Brad Ball with dishes perfectly paired with the HMS Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and the HMS Sphynx Chardonnay 2010. This duo of wines is aptly named after two ships that formed part of the squadron of Royal Navy ships that partook in the Battle of Muizenberg, with skirmishes occurring where the Steenberg Vineyards now grow. Famously, this battle ended five weeks later with the surrender of the Cape to the British.

Seen savouring our fine wine along with the ambience steeped in history are:

Ingrid Motteux and Chef Brad Ball with Cathy Marston

Angela Lloyd and winemaker JD Pretorius with Fiona MacDonald

Christan Eedes and cellar master John Loubser
with winemaker JD Pretorius
